California to Carolina
February 22, 2015
“He spun lyrics that evoked such strong emotions, lyrics that, honest and telling, brought me somewhere familiar yet unexpected. To say the least I was blown away. I bought the artist’s album, The Lucky Few, then and there. And to this day I haven’t found a musician in Greensboro that I support so fully...”
No stranger to wanderlust, singer/songwriter Alan Peterson infuses the weight and wonder of longitudes and latitudes into his lyrics and strings. Sincere words parallel the cadence of original music crafting a sound that doesn’t live in genre-specific spaces, but instead exists in the breaths between the expected. Whether you experience his music in a full-band or duo setting, every song builds on the foundation of one dynamic voice and accompanying guitar.
A North Carolina native, Alan’s first enchantment with notes and meters was sparked by a professor hammering out jazz standards on a piano. Every pause of this man’s playing was followed with “Where do you think I’m going next?” Alan spent the rest of his college years living in practice rooms answering that question to his own satisfaction and developing his sound on piano before he ever touched strings.
His subsequent years of traveling the country transformed theory into practice, and practice into proficiency - the result of which is acoustic-driven sound born out of the idea of a voice and guitar, braced by the anchor of honest songwriting.
California to Carolina, his solo debut album, speaks to the struggle of how to build something lasting out of transience, and how to survive when all that was built is broken down. Familiar imagery and relatable memories emerge in every lyric, calling every listener to connect no matter their journey. Peterson’s engaging album oscillates between upbeat melodies and brooding riffs, perfectly paralleling the odyssey of finding home.
